ABOUT THE LINDAAS BARN
The barn, built in 1949 from lumber salvaged from a much larger barn built in 1900, stands on the Elroy Lindaas Farm near Mayville, North Dakota. The farm has a history that began in 1878 when Endre Lindaas, a Norwegian immigrant, took up residence as part of the United States Homestead Act. In 1881, he married Antonette Monson Bye who was born in southern Minnesota to Norwegian immigrant parents. They raised six children; one of them being Eddie Adolph Lindaas, who took over the farm in 1917. Eddie Married Emma Emelia Bestul, who was born and raised on a farm near Iola and Scandinavia, Wisconsin.
In 1956, their son Elroy and his wife Janice Roberta Pederson took over the farm operation. They continued to live on the farmstead after retirement.
Around 1989, a group of Elroy's musician friends began using the barn loft as a good place to play music. As time progressed, word got around and the attendance increased to a point that many came from 100 miles away to enjoy the music and dancing. The facility began adding improvements such as a first rate floor, better stairway, seating around the perimeter, a well lit stage, a sound system, rest rooms, coffee, sodas and potluck snacks.
Each summer, the barn continues to provide a great place for performers as well as a cozy place to enjoy family style fun. There is a "No Alcoholic Beverage" rule that assures that young and old alike may enjoy the events.
Everyone is welcome; Come and enjoy a unique social gathering!

Expanding Access for All
A Community Invitation to Help Make History More Inclusive
Our Mission
The Friends of Lindaas Barn Dance are dedicated to building community through live music and dance at the historic Lindaas Barn—a welcoming venue open to dancers and music lovers of all ages.
Our Story in Brief
Founded in 2023, our group carries on a tradition that began in 1989, when Elroy Lindaas hosted musicians and dancers from across North Dakota in his family barn. Over the years, with community support, we’ve added a dance floor, modern restrooms, improved lighting, air conditioning, and a sound system. Today, our family-friendly dances (held June–September) draw people of all ages, fostering connection and celebrating local heritage.
2026 Lift Project
We invite you to join us in making the historic Lindaas Barn in rural Mayville, ND, fully accessible for everyone. The Friends of Lindaas Barn Dance, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, is launching a fundraising campaign to install a wheelchair/people lift. This vital improvement will ensure all guests, regardless of mobility, can enjoy the music, dancing, and fellowship that make our barn a special place.
Project Outcomes and Accountability
With your help, we aim to:
-
Enhance accessibility so everyone can participate, regardless of ability.
-
Broaden access to free, live music and dance for all.
-
Strengthen our entire community by preserving a cherished gathering place.
Thank you for considering a donation to the Friends of Lindaas Barn Dance. Your support helps us celebrate our heritage and build a more inclusive community. Please reach out through our email: lindaasbarndance @gmail.com with questions or to discuss your gift.

Let’s "raise the barn"—and welcome EVERYONE to the dance!
